The Collect for Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter is:
“Almighty and eternal God, who through the regenerating power of Baptism have been pleased to confer on us heavenly life, grant, we pray, that those you render capable of immortality by justifying them may by your guidance attain the fullness of glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.”
Reflection
Continuing our Easter theme, this prayer begins by reminding us that Baptism allows us to enter into heavenly life. Then, it basically repeats that point by specifying that our capacity for immortality comes from being justified. So, Baptism doesn’t just cover over our faults, but actually gets down into our souls and makes them just. The fullest effect of this becoming just – justification – takes place over our whole lifetime. That’s why we are eager to pray for continued guidance in attaining the “fullness of glory.”
So, for your daily contribution to the Church’s collection of prayer,
Think back to your own baptism. If it’s before you remember, try recalling a baptism you have witnessed. Remind yourself that the water didn’t just wash off your head, but actually cleaned your soul. Pray for God to continue washing your soul and making you into a just and holy person. Then spiritually unite that prayer to all the Masses throughout the world today. That way, when the priest says “Let us pray,” you can be a part of that “us” even if you don’t get to attend Mass.
