The Collect for Tuesday of the Sixth Week of Easter is:
“Grant, almighty and merciful God, that we may in truth receive a share in the Resurrection of Christ your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.”
Reflection
We invoke God as almighty because we know he has the power to make us share in Christ’s resurrection. We already know for certain that everyone will rise from the dead on the last day, but some will rise to face eternal punishment. For that reason, we invoke God as merciful. Under both these attributes we ask to share in Christ’s resurrection in truth. This can mean that we are asking to avoid a false idea of resurrection and sharing in Christ. It also serves as a reminder that the we must be in the Truth as part of our salvation. So, we understand truth as both the means of salvation and as part of the goal. And we must remember that this share has to be received; it is not something we can do by ourselves.
So, for your daily contribution to the Church’s collection of prayer,
Ponder what it means to say God is “almighty” as well as “merciful.” Pray to God for the grace to always stay close to the Truth of who God is and how we are saved by him. Then spiritually unite that prayer to all the Masses throughout the world today. That way, when the priest says “Let us pray,” you can be a part of that “us” even if you don’t get to attend Mass.
