Announcing Salvation

Homily for Palm Sun, Year B                                                                        March 25, 2018

Tradition tells us that March 25 is the date of the Annunciation, when Mary agreed to be the mother of our savior. St. Augustine once wrote that March 25 was also the actual date of the crucifixion. That makes this Passion Sunday a wonderful coincidence. On March 25th, God offered to Mary the chance to be the Mother of Jesus Christ, the messiah. But, this required her to have a special share in Jesus’ suffering and death too. Now, the Lord offers us the chance to receive redemption through the same Jesus Christ, but it also requires that we share in Jesus’ suffering and death. So, sit in silence and listen. Hear God announce to you the news of a savior, hear him announce to you the way to salvation, hear him invite you into the suffering and death of Jesus, which you caused by your sins. Hear him and pray that you, like Mary, will have the grace to endure the cross so as to share in the resurrection.
