Collect taken from the Tuesday of the 1st Week of Advent
Collect: Look with favor, Lord God, on our petitions, and in our trials grant us your compassionate help, that, consoled by the presence of your Son, whose coming we now await, we may be tainted no longer by the corruption of former ways. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son…
“Look with favor, Lord God, on our petitions, and in our trials grant us your compassionate help,”
– We make a direct appeal to God’s compassion, knowing that he is kind and generous because he’s already given his Son to us.
“that, consoled by the presence of your Son, whose coming we now await, we may be tainted no longer by the corruption of former ways.”
– The presence of God’s son is both consoling and cleansing. This prayer directs us toward sincere repentance because we see our former ways as “corruption.” Even though admitting our corruption and sin can be difficult, once we do, we will find consolation in no longer being tainted.
Question & Advice: What image of God do you have: compassionate and loving or harsh and judgmental? Do you really see your “former ways” as corruption? Do you recognize that the Son of God is already with you by Baptism?
Read about conversion in the Catechism (1427-33). Spend some of your daily prayer time reflecting on your image of God. Ask Him to deepen your knowledge of what He is truly like. Then, think about your worst or your most common fault/sin. Ask God to free you from that corruption and resolve to no longer be tainted by it.
