Thirty-First Week in Ordinary Time

Collect taken from Thirty-First Week of Ordinary Time.

Collect: Almighty and merciful God, by whose gift your faithful offer you right and praiseworthy service, grant, we pray, that we may hasten without stumbling to receive the things you have promised. Through our Lord Jesus Christ…

Almighty and merciful God, by whose gift your faithful offer you right and praiseworthy service,
– As the letter to the Hebrews tells us, without faith it is impossible to please God. So, we praise God who gives us the faith that enables us to please. Also, we are grateful for the gift of the Liturgy, which is given to us by the Holy Spirit as the right way to worship God.

grant, we pray, that we may hasten without stumbling to receive the things you have promised.
– Inspired by this faith and strengthened by true worship, we ask to be zealous in following God and able to avoid the many stumbling blocks put in our way by the world, the evil one, and our own fallen flesh.

Questions & Advice: Do you try to please God? For you, is the mass just a chore or task to be taken care of? Do you “hasten” toward God’s promises, or merely pursue them idly and inconsistently?

Read about the Liturgy in the Catechism (1136-44). In your daily prayer time, reflect on whether or not you’ve really invested your heart and mind in the worship of God, which is right and praiseworthy service. As “source and summit,” the Mass nourishes our faith and bring everything back to God. The next time you are at mass, make a conscious choice to mentally place on the altar all the work you’re trying to do in service to God and your neighbor. Offer it to God, then receive back greater faith and strength for continued service.
