Collect taken from the optional memorial of St. John of Capistrano, priest.
Collect: O God, who raised up Saint John of Capistrano to comfort your faithful people in tribulation, place us, we pray, under your safe protection and keep your Church in everlasting peace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son…
“ O God, who raised up Saint John of Capistrano to comfort your faithful people in tribulation,”
— Drawing on our belief that God does not abandon his people, we acknowledge the providence at work in St. John’s life. In a time of plague, Church division, and Turkish invasion, St. John served as a reminder of God’s care by his response to all of these crises.
“place us, we pray, under your safe protection and keep your Church in everlasting peace.”
— Having stirred up that faith, we now ask for God’s continued to protection, recognizing that God has promised not to let the Church be destroyed.
Questions & Advice: What are the greatest trials in your life? Can you see God’s care or consolation in these areas? Is your faith shaken by His apparent silence or distance?
Read about persevering in faith in the Catechism (162-165). In your daily prayer time, spend some time reflecting on the times you have felt consoled or supported God. Ask him to help you recognize the ways in which he is providing for your and for the grace to persevere. Then, try to be ready to offer some support or consolation to anyone who is struggling in your life.
