Collect taken from the memorial of the Guardian Angels, priest.
Collect: O God, who in your unfathomable providence are pleased to send your holy Angels to guard us, hear our supplication as we cry to you, that we may always be defended by their protection and rejoice eternally in their company. Through our Lord Jesus Christ…
“O God, who in your unfathomable providence are pleased to send your holy Angels to guard us,”
– In every aspect of God’s providence we see that He is eager to have others love. Since love is a self-gift and leads to service, that love means all things server in some way. In this case, we see that design in God’s plan for Angels to serve by having them guard us.
“hear our supplication as we cry to you, that we may always be defended by their protection and rejoice eternally in their company.”
– While our guardian angel does not stop trying to protect us, we are still left with free will and the ability to bring harm to ourselves. In even making this prayer, we are trying to cooperate with God’s plan and the Angels’ mission, both of which are meant to get us to heaven.
Questions & Advice: Do you really believe there is an Angel watching over you right now? Do you ask the help of your Guardian Angel often? Do you see him as the powerful, spiritual protector that he is or do you treat him like a pet?
Read about the Church’s teaching on Angels in general and our Guardian Angels in particular (328-36). I recommend using the Guardian angel prayer (in image below). Also spend some of your daily prayer time reflecting on how careful you are with protecting your soul from sin. Think about whether or not you make it harder for your Guardian Angel. Try to reflect on how often you get a “sense” that you shouldn’t do something wrong, and how often you ignore it. That just might be your Guardian Angel trying to help. Also, do not try to name your Angel.
