Collect taken from Monday of the Seventh Week of Easter.
Collect: May the power of the Holy Spirit come to us, we pray, O Lord, that we may keep your will faithfully in mind and express it in a devout way of life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ…
“May the power of the Holy Spirit come to us, we pray, O Lord“
– We are in the midst of the Novena to the Holy Spirit, the original novena in the life of the Church. As such, the prayers for this entire week ask for the Holy Spirit and look forward to his coming.
“that we may keep your will faithfully in mind and express it in a devout way of life.”
– We seek the Holy Spirit to do two things that are impossible for human nature alone. Our minds are darkened and distracted by sin and our lives tend toward selfishness and destruction. Thus, the Spirit enters into both these areas to make us faithfully attentive and dedicated to holiness.
Questions & Advice: Are you looking forward to the coming of the Holy Spirit? Do you invoke his power often or do you primarily rely on your own power? Is your weakness greater in attention to the divine will or in expressing it through actions?
Spend some of your daily prayer time reflecting on the ways that you look forward to God’s promises. Consider joining the Holy Spirit Novena even though it’s almost half way through. Start reading about the Holy Spirit in the Catechism and consider working your way through the entire section leading up to Pentecost.
