Collect taken from the Saturday of the Third Week of Easter.
Collect: O God, who in the font of Baptism have made new those who believe in you, keep safe those reborn in Christ, that, defeating every onslaught of error, they may faithfully preserve the grace of your blessing. Through our Lord Jesus Christ…
“O God, who in the font of Baptism have made new those who believe in you, keep safe those reborn in Christ“
– People who have been baptized are new creatures. This is not common knowledge or a popular thing to say, but the baptized are Children of God in a way that the unbaptized are not. This is a real gift and on that must be honored and kept safe. Hence, we pray for that security.
“that, defeating every onslaught of error, they may faithfully preserve the grace of your blessing.”
– Notice that a central part of “preserving the grace of [God’s] blessing” is to defeat the onslaught of error. Knowing the truth and escaping error is part of God’s blessing. In a time of relativism and skepticism, we must pray to cling to what Christ says “the Truth will set you free.”
Questions & Advice: Do you realize how significant baptism is? Do you actually want others to share in that gift? If you do realize the difference between the baptized and the unbaptized, are you working to bring that gift to others? Are you more afraid of physical harm or of heresy (error about the faith)?
Read about the value and effects of Baptism. Spend some of your daily prayer time interceding for people in you life who are not baptized. Get to know some of the great heresies of the past so you can avoid falling into them now.
