Collect: O God, who in your unfathomable providence are pleased to send your holy Angels to guard us, hear our supplication as we cry to you, that we may always be defended by their protection and rejoice eternally in their company. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son…

O God, who in your unfathomable providence are pleased to send your holy Angels to guard us
— God’s providence is unfathomable for many reasons: it affects all time and space, it works according to a plan we don’t fully know, and lastly that it also directs creatures that are invisible to us, angels. What we do know is that these angels exist, that each of us is given an individual guardian angel, and that all the God-fearing angels seek to help the people of God. What a gift!

hear our supplication as we cry to you, that we may always be defended by their protection and rejoice eternally in their company
— Although the angel is already given the task of defending us, we nonetheless ask for their protection because it is God’s will that He accomplish His will in and through our prayers. He moves us to pray for our protection so that we can be cooperators with Him in our own salvation just as He uses angels to provide us with protection that could easily come directly for God. He simply enjoys working in and with His beloved creatures.

Advice: Pray the Angel of God prayer and remember to thank God for your guardian angel. Try to cultivate the habit of praying this daily, nightly, and in times of temptation – it is good for all of us to do this, not just children.
Read a little bit about who and what guardian angels are. There are a lot of false ideas in popular culture that take away from the fully beauty of the Church’s teaching. In addition to the link provided at the beginning of the post, you can read these articles by EWTN and Catholicism.com. Hint: human beings never become angels and it’s not a good idea to “name” your angel – it’s not a pet.

Angel of God, be at my side!
