Today’s Daily Collection comes from Sts. Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs
Collect: May you be magnified, O Lord, by the revered memory of your Saints Cosmas and Damian, for with providence beyond words you have conferred on them everlasting glory, and on us, your unfailing help. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son…
“May you be magnified, O Lord, by the revered memory of your Saints Cosmas and Damian”
— To praise the works of the Lord is to praise the Lord. Especially in the case of Martyrs like these two, to remember the great things that a person did for the Love of God serves to magnify the Lord in the minds and hearts of those who hear of it.
“for with providence beyond words you have conferred on them everlasting glory, and on us, your unfailing help”
— We can never grow weary of reminding ourselves that God is all-powerful and that we can rely on his providence. Mysteriously, God’s powerful providence actually works through our free will without taking away our freedom. This is the mystery of grace, which actually makes us more free and enables to live a little bit of heaven’s glory here on earth. In fact, the “everlasting glory” and “unfailing help” are both a kind of grace – they are closely related to one another.
Advice: Do you know anyone who truly strives for holiness? Someone who frequently glorifies God in their lives? Thank God for their effort, their example, their success. If possible praise their efforts and encourage them to continue, for by doing so you will be magnifying God. Also, you could read up on Cosmas and Damian and find a way to work them into at least one conversation you have today.
Ask Cosmas and Damian to pray for you to recognize God’s providence in your life, past and present. Spend a few minutes on your knees begging God to help you to accept grace not as an imposition by God but as an opportunity to maximize true freedom.
